St Edmunds Hospital.
It has become an eyesore for the people of Northampton for the last 15 years but a solution to what will happen to the old St Edmunds hospital in the town centre appears to be no nearer after a bid to remove the buildings Grade 2 listing was rejected by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport in August 2013.
There were plans to convert the site into offices and retirement homes and work did start in 2010 but then stopped and the planning permission has now expired.
It was originally built in 1836 as a workhouse, designed by architect George Gilbert Scott, and it could house 300 inmates and cost £7000. It became a hospital in the 1930’s but closed in 1998 and has since been left abandoned apart from the normal visitors to these derelict buildings like vandals, drug users and the homeless.
